Resist the feeling that you need to fix your child when they become dis-regulated.
Resist the thought that you may be responsible for your child's emotions.
During messy moments try to encourage, support and empathize with your child's feelings.
Resist the urge to distract them to quiet their emotions. This takes them out of the moment and away from feeling their feelings.
Feelings that may be erupting are usually not from the current event- that is just what touched it off.
